How to get to Marken from Amsterdam
Marken is one of the easiest half-day trips from Amsterdam: a former island of wooden houses and brown-sailed boats, about 16 kilometres northeast of the city. Here is every way to get there, with times, tickets and a few local tips.
The short answer: the fastest way to get to Marken from Amsterdam is direct bus 315, which takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes from Amsterdam Centraal. If you have more time, cycling the dike route or taking the ferry from Volendam turns the journey itself into the best part of the day.
By bus (the easy way)
Bus 315, run by EBS, is the direct connection between Amsterdam and Marken. You can catch it at Amsterdam Centraal (the bus stops are on the IJ side of the station) and ride straight to the edge of the car-free village in around 30 to 45 minutes. If you are already north of the river, take metro 52 to Amsterdam Noord and pick up the same line there.
Buses run roughly every half hour on weekdays and slightly less often at weekends, so it is worth checking live times before you leave. Pay with a contactless bank card or phone (OVpay) or an OV-chipkaart when you board. For the exact departure and platform, plan your trip on 9292.nl or in Google Maps on the day.
By bike (the scenic way)
Cycling is how many locals reach Marken, and it is genuinely lovely. From behind Amsterdam Centraal, take a free GVB ferry across the IJ to Amsterdam Noord, then follow the Waterlandse Zeedijk through Durgerdam and Uitdam. The route hugs the water almost the whole way and reaches Marken in about an hour (roughly 20 kilometres). Rental bikes are easy to find near the station.
At Uitdam the road turns onto the narrow causeway that has linked Marken to the mainland since 1957. Ride slowly here: the views across the Markermeer are the reason people make this trip.
By ferry from Volendam
If you want to see two villages in one day, combine Marken with Volendam. Take bus 316 from Amsterdam to Volendam, then cross the water on the Marken Express, the passenger ferry that runs between the two harbours in about half an hour. It usually operates from spring through autumn, several times a day. Arriving in Marken by boat, with the botters lined up in the harbour, is the classic way to see it.
By car
Driving from Amsterdam takes around 25 to 30 minutes outside rush hour. Marken's historic centre is car-free, so you park in the paid car park at the village entrance and walk in, which only takes a couple of minutes. On summer weekends the car park fills early, so come in the morning or take the bus instead.
How long to spend in Marken
Give yourself at least two to three hours. Marken is small, but its charm is in the details: the wooden houses raised on mounds, the harbour, the clog workshop, the little church full of model ships. It rewards a slow, unhurried walk far more than a quick photo stop.
